During a visit to Marseille on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to build a new military hospital on the Sainte-Marthe site by "the beginning of the next decade."
Macron explained that the purpose of the new facility in the coastal city is to "prepare France for a possible high-intensity war."
The president noted that the hospital will "play a key role in the event of a major war," but added that it will also provide a wide range of healthcare services as well. Macron added that "the next-generation medical center is intended to meet the needs of the army for decades to come."
France is not the only European country to examine its combat strategy and preparedness for war as many European countries have been rethinking the readiness and strategies of their armed forces as the war in Ukraine continues in its second year with fears mounting that it could spread to other parts of Europe.
While Germany rushes to update its fleet of tanks and Poland opened the first permanent U.S. Army Garrison on its territory this year, France is addressing its ability to "treat more serious combat casualties. The new hospital is expected to cost the French government €300 million to build.
While the new medical center at Sainte-Marthe will not be the only military hospital in Marseille, it will be the most modern. The Laverna Hospital has long operated in Marseille, however, local authorities believe that it is too outdated to meet the needs of modern soldiers or the challenges of potential future conflicts.
