On Thursday, Britain's Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, confirmed that the UK will be sending Storm Shadow long-range missiles to Ukraine. "I can confirm that the UK is donating Storm Shadow missiles to Ukraine," Wallace told Parliament. The missiles should assist Ukraine in regaining some of its territory that is currently under Russian occupation.

"The use of Storm Shadow will allow Ukraine to push back Russian forces based within Ukraine sovereign territory," Wallace added.

According to UK officials, the gift of the missiles is timed to coincide with Kyiv's much-anticipated counteroffensive, which appears to have been delayed by a few months.

The Storm Shadow's range is of great significance as it can travel more than 250km (155 miles) compared to the U.S.-provided HIMARS, which only has a range of 80km (50 miles).

The missiles are fired from aircraft and with the longer range, Ukrainian pilots won't have to be as close to the frontline. The missiles, which are equipped with an infra-red seeker, cruise at a low altitude to avoid radar detection before locking onto their target.

The British government decided to provide the missiles after Russia "continued down a dark path," Wallace told parliament referring to Moscow's continued assaults on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. After an almost 2 month hiatus from large-scale aerial attacks, Russia has drastically increased its airstrikes on Ukraine in recent weeks.

Wallace went on to confirm that some of the missiles are already on their way to Ukraine and indicated that some may already be in the country. "The donation of these missile systems gives Ukraine the best chance of defending themselves against Russia's brutality," Wallace said.

Meanwhile, top U.S. officials are "breathing a sigh of relief," over Britain's decision to send the missiles. Does this mean, however, that the U.S. or other allies will be sending additional aircraft as well?
