In 1997, the movie Wag the Dog depicts a fictional president starting a war to divert attention from his personal sex scandal. The next year, President Clinton ordered military strikes in Afghanistan and Sudan just days after the Monica Lewinsky story was heating up in the courtroom. Many alleged that Clinton was using military actions to distract from his personal sexual scandal.

Fast forward to 2025.

The drug problem in America is decades old. Deaths increased during Trump’s first term as President and there were no international drug strikes at the time. 2024 deaths were down 27% in 2024 as reported by the CDC on 14 May 2025.

On 1 September 2025, the US military destroyed a boat carrying 11 people that the Trump administration said were Tren de Aragua gang members bringing drugs to the United States. Marco Rubio stated that the drug dealers “pose and immediate threat” to US national security and defended the attack. Bipartisan lawmakers have expressed skepticism of the administration’s facts.1

The US also began building up military power on assault ships in the Caribbean and on the island of Puerto Rico. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the buildup was not for training.2

Four days ago, Republicans in the Senate circled wagons (minus Senators Hawley and Paul) to block the release of the Epstein files as national pressure mounts to release the files and expose the truth.

‘Why Now’ is very applicable to this moment in time. Why is the US government at this exact moment declaring an emergency and actually directing military strikes against foreign boats in international waters?

One conclusion is that it is trying to distract America from the Epstein files, a problem that just doesn’t seem to go away.
