On Friday, a NATO official announced that a Polish jet patrolling over the Black Sea near Romania on behalf of Frontex, the EU’s border agency, had a concerning encounter with a Russian aircraft.

“NATO air policing detachments were put on higher readiness in response to the dangerous behavior of a Russian military plane in the vicinity of a Polish Frontex aircraft over the Black Sea near Romania,” the official said, according to a report from Zerohedge.

The Romanian Defense Ministry released a statement accusing Russia of provoking the Polish aircraft. “This incident is further proof of the provocative approach of the Russian Federation in the Black Sea,” the ministry’s statement said.

The incident with the Frontex jet is not the first dangerous encounter between NATO and Russian aircraft. In March, a Russian fighter jet downed a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone near Crimea.

According to recently leaked Pentagon documents, another near miss occurred on September 29 that almost resulted in a Russian jet shooting down a British surveillance plane when a Russian pilot fired a missile at the plane after misinterpreting information from a radar operator. The missile malfunctioned.
