Many More Bombers, Yes, BUT WAIT ON RETIRING B-2s, B-1s, B-52s
A recent article argues for buying 100 more B-21 bombers (reaching 200 total rather than the currently planned 100) plus 115 more F-47 fighters (to reach 300 total). This buy, at an added cost “north of $100 billion”, would be to “deny China ‘sanctuaries’ from which it can launch air and missile salvos during a potential invasion of Taiwan ...”. HOWEVER, the article goes on to acknowledge that “Two hundred [B-21s] isn’t based off of a full-up World War III scenario …” [https://www.airandspaceforces.com/new-report-air-force-b-21s-f-47s-enemy-sanctuaries/].
Denying Chinese sanctuaries is a noble thought, and short-legged fighters (F-47s plus others) would likely be useful in a Taiwan scenario.
HOWEVER, REAL NATIONAL DETERRENCE, ESPECIALLY IN THE FACE OF SEVERAL NUCLEAR-ARMED ADVERSARIES, DEMANDS THAT America get serious about the need for many more than 200 long-legged B-21 bombers, and budget for them. This need is explained in more detail at https://armedforces.press/air-force/2025/07/30/america-must-get-serious-about-the-need-for-hundreds-of-more-bombers-and-budget-for-them/!
Use ALL of the “north of $100 billion” to increase the currently planned buy of 100 long-legged B-21s in a mass-production purchase to reach (or exceed) the 360 figure noted in the July, 2025 article referenced above! Also, do not retire any B-2s nor upgraded B-52s, although it may be possible to trim the B-1 fleet as the long-term B-21 buy matures, but only then.
