Force Protection From Drones

AFP recently wrote about the dangers to American high-performance aircraft parked on the ramp domestically, and when deployed globally.

In response to our inquiry, the Department of the Air Force has issued a statement. The following is attributable to a Department of the Air Force spokesperson:

The Department of the Air Force takes unauthorized unmanned aerial system overflights of our installations and assets very seriously. Drone incursions are an urgent and evolving threat. In concert with US NORTHCOM and other government organizations, the Air Force is actively working to develop and implement layered counter UAS capabilities to detect, identify, track, and defeat UAS threats. This includes participating in exercises, deploying new technologies, training personnel, and ensuring close coordination with interagency partners to share information on potential threats, and enhance communication.

Title 10 authorities give the Department of War permission to detect drones that operate near and over our installations or restricted airspace, and Installation leaders consistently monitor air space for base security. Additionally, bases have unique defensives postures and actions to implement that ensure continued base security and/or effective response in case of incursion. On the technology front, we are working to develop technology to detect and identify UAS, while maintaining close communication with applicable local and national agencies. For operational security reasons, we are unable to provide additional details.
